Frequently Asked Questions about Hair Restoration and Hair Transplantation for New Hair Growth from our hair loss specialist in houston

What is NeoGraft?

NeoGraft is a new hair-transplantation device that facilitates individual hair follicle harvesting during an “FUE,” a type of hair transplant. This dramatically improves the accuracy and the speed over the previously used manual extraction, or “strip,” technique of hair restoration used to promote new hair growth.

Dr. Lucian Rivela is the first hair doctor and board-certified plastic surgeon in the Houston / Spring / The Woodlands / Metroplex/ South Texas Area to offer NeoGraft surgery for FUE hair transplants. This type of hair restoration can be used for the treatment of thinning hair or balding hair in female or male-patterned hair loss.

What is the “FUE” hair transplant?

“FUE,” or “Follicular-Unit Extraction,” is an advanced minimally invasive hair-transplant method that allows for the harvesting of individual follicles from the donor site without a scalpel or stitches. Because no scalpel incision is needed, it leaves no linear scar.

Why does the new hair grow where the old hair didn’t?

The patterns of male and female hair loss, thinning, and balding are created by genetic markers which do not affect the hair growth on the denser back section of the head. Although the hair follicle has been surgically moved, the genetic marker does not change.

What are the main benefits of FUE over linear hair harvesting?

It is well-accepted that FUE transplants can heal faster and more comfortably than linear-harvested techniques using a scalpel and requiring stitches. With FUE, once healing is complete, the patient has the option of wearing very short hair without worry of an unsightly tell-tale linear scar. Without the need for stitches, recovery downtime is shorter and there are fewer post-procedure activity restrictions such as sports and physical exercise.

What are the advantages of NeoGraft over manual FUE treatments?

The highly ergonomic mechanical NeoGraft works as a natural extension of the surgeon’s hand, allowing for faster and more accurate harvesting of hair follicles. NeoGraft patients now reach their goal with less time in the procedure chair and fewer procedures altogether.

How do I know if I would be a good candidate?

Anyone who might want less pain and quicker recovery is a good candidate, provided they have a sufficient thickness of donor’s hair on the back of their scalp to transplant. NeoGraft is especially for individuals who would like the continued option of choosing to wear very short hair in the back or sides of their head and scalp.

NeoGraft is an excellent option for those who want the least amount of activity restriction (such as athletes) after their hair-transplant procedure. NeoGraft/FUE can also be used for “scar camouflage” procedures for patients with prior hair restoration styles such as linear harvest methods. In these cases, it is used to hide the previous scar better. The procedure can also be used for individuals seeking body hair transplants.

Is NeoGraft/FUE transplantation suitable for both men and women?

Yes, as NeoGraft/FUE is very minimally invasive, it is an excellent option for both men and women looking to restore their living and growing hair. It is also ideal for individuals of all ages as a reconstructive treatment for burn scars on the head and scalp.

Is the procedure painful?

The FUE procedure is not painful, because not only can local anesthetic be used to numb the region, but analgesia can also be used in the form of Pro-NoxPro-Nox is a 50/50 mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen gas; its effects are felt almost immediately. This analgesic gas reduces pain, discomfort, or anxiety during the procedure, and the patient can safely and easily administer it.

Are the final transplant results any different between NeoGraft/FUE and those of linear harvesting?

The overall visual results in the transplanted area are comparable and very similar in both procedures. The final results of new hair growth were seen in 6 to 12 months for each method.

The difference in results is not seen as much in the area of new hair growth, but more in the final result in the donor area. With NeoGraft, there is no linear scar to be seen and/or felt because of its patented technique of minor individual graft extractions. Hence, the difference is the speed of recovery, absence of the linear scar, and a dramatic reduction in the amount of pain and possible complications.

Do I have to get a total “buzz cut” to have the NeoGraft/FUE procedure?

No, if your hair in the back of your head is long enough during the procedure, harvesting using NeoGraft/FUE can be performed by shaving small hidden donor areas, which your other existing hair can cover. A buzz-cut style is recommended in the donor area for maximum yield or transplanting larger numbers of grafts.
